Geopolitical Processes and Imaginaries in Central Europe: States, Borders, Integration and Regional Development (2020-2023)

The research project has been implemented with the support provided from the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund of Hungary

The NKFIH OTKA research project “Geopolitical Processes and Maps in Central Europe: states, borders, integration and territorial development”, ID 134903, was launched on 1 September 2020 with the participation of CERS/KRTK and external researchers, assessing the Central European processes at that time and hypothesizing their potential fading.

The local and international conditions for the research changed fundamentally in 2021 due to the COVID pandemic and from 24 February 2022 due to the Russian-Ukrainian war. Our research has been modified out of necessity, but in a rational way, in response to the changing environment, and these modifications have been reflected in the scientific publications of the research team. The first and second year’s scientific achievements were accepted by the “GAZD” jury of OTKA with very positive evaluations. Suggestions were made for future evaluation of the impact of the Russian-Ukrainian war.

The assessment of the military and political processes of the current war is the subject of political debate both at home and abroad, beyond the fact that there is a broad consensus that Russia is the aggressor. Hungary has become isolated within both the EU and NATO because of the intensity of Hungarian-Russian relations and energy dependence. Hungarian-Ukrainian intergovernmental relations have developed in an extremely negative way, and in the background, the Ukrainian aspirations of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia must also be recognized.
