A\u00a0book chapter<\/a><\/u>\u00a0co-authored by T\u00fcnde Vir\u00e1g with Vera Messing, in\u00a0‘Urban Marginality, Racialization, Interdependence’,<\/a><\/u>\u00a0edited by F. Alexandrescu, R. Powell and A. Vilenica, has been published. This chapter provides an analysis of governing an urban area historically characterized by high levels of ethnic, racial, religious, and social diversity and related urban marginality, yet stigmatized as an ethnic \u201cghetto\u201d by mainstream society for several decades. It explores the interconnected mechanism of invisibilization and racialization of different local groups. They analyse how a socially and ethnically diverse neighbourhood had been constructed as a \u201cghetto\u201d and how different municipalities contested or endorsed the criminal and racial stigma attached to the place. To do so, we connect Waquantian concepts of \u201eghetto\u201d and \u201eanti-ghetto\u201d with Cohen\u2019s notion of moral panic to reveal key elements in the construction of the imaginary of unwanted populations and how these are adapted to the political needs of the governing actors.<\/div>\n
